Nota Bene

We are pleased to present the 2024 edition of Nota Bene – the magazine of the University of Queensland Law Alumni Association.

This is the fourth edition of Nota Bene that has been published. As with previous issues, the aim of Nota Bene is to celebrate and document the accomplishments of UQ’s law alumni community, as well as showcase the activities of the UQLA and the Law school during the course of the past year.

Nota Bene (Summer 2024)

Our feature articles this year have both a historical and present day focus, and are themed around UQ alumni who appeared in, and sat on, the Privy Council. Up until 1976 (in the case of appeals from the High Court) and until 1986 (in the case of appeals from State Supreme Courts), the Privy Council was Australia’s ultimate appellate court. In this issue, we feature three specially commissioned articles on this topic. The first, by the Hon Paul de Jersey AC CVO KC, reflects on his two appearances in the Privy Council in the 1980s. The second, by the Hon James Douglas KC, recounts his experience as associate to Sir Harry Gibbs while Sir Harry sat on the Privy Council in 1974. Finally, Mohammud Jaamae Hafeez-Baig contributes a present day perspective as an Australian barrister appearing in contemporary Privy Council appeals.

Through the generosity of UQ law alumni, the UQLA has also continued to be able to grow its scholarship programme over 2024. This year, we are pleased to announce two new UQLA scholarships – the Kiefel Scholarship (in honour of the Hon Susan Kiefel AC KC), and the Ryan Scholarship (in honour of the Hon Kevin Ryan CBE QC). Biographies of both Chief Justice Kiefel and Justice Ryan appear in this issue. The UQLA is delighted that this further financial support for current students that are in financial need has been able to be established.

This edition also features Peter Applegarth AM SC’s entertaining and thought-provoking address to this year UQLA Alumni Breakfast – entitled “What was not so good about the good old days .... and what UQ Law Alumni did to change them, a copy of UQLA Director Sam Walpole’s address to the December 2023 UQ Law Graduation Ceremony, profiles of Law School staff member Dr Renato Costa and PhD Candidate Laurensia Andrini and our usual sections on Law School news, alumni studying overseas and judicial appointments and retirements. We hope you enjoy reading Nota Bene over the Christmas break.
