Nota Bene

On behalf of the UQLA, we are pleased to present the 2022 edition of Nota Bene – the magazine of the University of Queensland Law Alumni Association. The 2022 edition is the second time that Nota Bene has been published, following on from the inaugural issue last year. We were very pleased by the positive reception the first edition of Nota Bene received, and hope that readers find perusing this latest publication as interesting and enjoyable.

Nota Bene (Spring 2022)

Our feature article for this edition focuses on 30 years of UQ law alumni associations, with the UQLA’s predecessor – the UQ Law Graduates Association (UQLGA) – having been established in 1992. In our feature article, we explore some of the early activities of the UQLGA, and the parallels between its initiatives and the current programmes undertaken by the UQLA. In line with this historical theme, we also have an article from John McKenna KC on the Macrossan Lecture – a series of lectures held at UQ pursuant to a donation from the Macrossan family over the period from 1928 to 1993. A series of distinguished lecturers delivered the lectures over that period, including Doc Evatt and Sir John Latham. The UQLA is delighted that 2023 will see the relaunch of the Annual Macrossan Lecture by the Law School, in conjunction with the UQLA.

Special features of this year’s Nota Bene are profiles of two UQ law alumni who have also embarked upon a literary career, in addition to their career in the law. In this issue, we profile barrister Simon Cleary, author of The Comfort of Figs and The War Artist, and solicitor Joanna Jenkins, whose debut novel How to Kill a Client will be published in February 2023. We hope you enjoy reading their profiles as much we enjoyed interviewing both of them – and recommend picking up a copy of each of their books. This edition of Nota Bene also includes Law School news, and profiles of some new staff and PhD candidates.
